Revueltas Award for Visual Arts: CARLOS BARBERENA

Barberena is a Nicaraguan self-taught Printmaker based in Chicago, where he runs the printmaking projects: Bandolero Press & La Calaca Press. He is also a member of the Instituto Gráfico de Chicago.
     Barberena is known for his satirical relief prints and the use of images from pop culture, as well as from political and cultural tragedies. In his art, he has consistently reflected on the cycles of repression and resistance and its relationship to the diaspora in which he has lived, throughout dictatorship, revolution, erasure, renewal, hope, dictatorship and repression. He makes art to shed light on these invisibilized experiences.
     Barberena has exhibited individually in Costa Rica, Estonia, France, México, Nicaragua, Spain and the United States of America, his work also has been shown in Art Biennials, Museums, Galleries and Cultural Centers around the world.
     He has received various awards, most notably the “National Printmaking Award 2012” given by the Nicaraguan Institute of Culture in Managua, Nicaragua; “Parchemin d’Honneur," 8 Triennale Mondial de l’Estampe et de la Gravure Originale, AMAC, Chamalieres, Auvergne, France and the award- poster for the Ecology and Human Rights in Banana Plantations in Costa Rica, given by GEBANA in Berlin, Germany.


Revueltas Award for Literature: JOSÉ ÁNGEL NAVEJAS

Navejas came to the United States from Mexico in 1993. He is the author of Illegal: Reflections of an Undocumented Immigrant, an autobiographical work that has been widely adopted as reading requirement in universities throughout the United States for courses ranging from literature to Latino studies and sociology. In 2019, the Spanish version of Illegal became the first book translated by the University of Illinois Press in its 100-year history. Among other distinctions, Illegal has been chosen by the Illinois Program for Research in the Humanities for its Illinois Reads Program (2018), the Freshmen Common Read at Cal-State, East Bay (2016-17), and the Moraine Valley Community College One Book One College program (2015). José Ángel has spoken on the plight of the undocumented at venues such as the Chicago Humanities Festival (2015), City of Asylum Pittsburgh (2017), as well as before academic audiences. He was Scholar in Residence at Monmouth College (2014), delivered the Dean's Diversity Lecture at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (2017), and has been invited to speak at the University of Notre Dame (2019), Princeton (2018), Northwestern (2014-2015), and the University of Chicago (2015), among many others. 
       In addition to Illegal, José Ángel has edited Palabras migrantes: 10 ensayistas mexican@s de Chicago (2018). He is also the author of Invierno (2019) and Un mojado en Chicago y tres discursos inaugurales (forthcoming in 2020).   
       José Ángel is currently a PhD candidate at the University of Illinois at Chicago, where he is writing a dissertation on a current literary movement of Spanish-language authors in Chicago. Recently, he was awarded the IUPLR National Mellon Fellowship for dissertation completion. 


Revueltas Award for Music: PABLO SERRANO

Serrano is a cultural worker raised and based in the immigrant community of Pilsen in Chicago. As the oldest son to undocumented immigrants who came from Durango Mexico, Pablo’s creative work has centered on bridging experiences. As an art teacher, Muralist, Painter, DJ, and founder of The People’s Stage Karaoke and Kombi he is constantly thinking about creative ways to bring people together in a historically segregated Chicago. Pablo cultural philosophy is best expressed as “De Aqui Y De Alla” which implies perpetual hybridity and bringing the best around us together. He is currently working on a mural for the main entrance for Farragut High School, hosts Chicago’s best karaoke dance parties every weekend, and alongside his partners at Kombi organizing and producing the next generation of musical experiences for the city.

Héctor Hernández

Hernández has lived in Chicago since 1965.
       He is the Branch Manager of Lozano Library in Pilsen since 1989. This cultural space has hosted the following authors: Carlos Monsiváis, Gustavo Sáinz, Andrés Henestrosa, Álvaro Ochoa Serrano, Alfonso Lara Castilla, Sheila Morataya, Lourdes Urrea and Luis Alberto Urrea, as well as a number of local writers.  Throughout his 40-year career at Chicago Public Library, Hernández has endeavored to meet the library and information needs of the city’s Latino communities.
      For his work in the community, he has earned awards from REFORMA — the National Association to Promote Library Services to the Spanish-Speaking, the Hispanic Literacy Council, Pilsen Alliance, and the Illinois Chess Association among others.
       In 1989, he founded Knight Moves Chess Club. The circle was named by a group of teens. Everyone learns critical thinking here. Local, state and national champions have come out of this chess group.  Tutoring and mentoring young people are among Hernández’s key contributions to this program.
        Besides the library, he has taught chess at prestigious Chicago schools: University of Chicago Lab School, Latin School of Chicago and St. Ignatius College Prep.
        Héctor Hernández’s Master’s degrees are in Librarianship, Spanish and Latin American Literature and Chess.

Eric José Mendoza

is a Mexican-American versatile tenor who frequently performs in the USA and in Mexico. He finished his studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with an emphasis in pedagogy and performance. He’s a member of the national music fraternity Phi Mu Alpha. For several years Mr. Mendoza lived in Mexico, there is where his passion for music and singing started while attending the institute of arts in Hidalgo. He attended the private music institute "ARS" where he stood out as the best student.
       Mr. Mendoza has a strong passion for his culture and for Music Education. He serves as an advocate for immigration rights and bringing music to communities in need. For the past couple of years, he’s been back to the USA actively teaching and performing, his fervent performances have earned him several awards. Recently, he was the recipient of full scholarships to summer programs in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle during the Classical Singers Competition in Chicago. Mr. Mendoza has also performed with the Chicago Symphony Chorus under the direction of Maestro Ricardo Muti.
       Mr. Mendoza has been given recitals and concerts in his college community and in Chicago, his most recent collaborations have been performing at the Chicago cultural center, the Mexican Consulate in Chicago and “La casa cultural Latina.” This Summer he toured Europe singing in Spain, France and Czech Republic, among other countries.

​Daniela Reyes

is a Soprano singer and a rising senior at Chicago High School for the Arts. She has being training in Classical Performance for 2 year. She continues to work hard in programs such as Merit School of Music, Interlochen, and will be part of the Lyric Opera Youth Council this fall. She has performed in numerous recitals while been in these programs, as well as performing in events like Interlochen’s Collage as first Solo Classical Singer in the camp’s history. Her goal after High School is to major in Vocal Performance and continue following her path towards the career she chose and loves.  Daniela believes that hard work payoff and will continue to works hard to become a role model for others to follow their dreams.

​Omar de la Torre

is a young Puertorrican artist singer and guitarist based in Chicago, IL. With 10 years of experience, his Latino and American songs have reached various stages and venues around the United States. He has been awarded in many singing competitions since early stages of his career. He has also composed and arranged songs for pop rock bands and Latino ensembles. Trained by professional musicians in Puerto Rico, Omar has a unique ability to sing, play, and arrange songs with style and presence.

originally from Mexico City, is an art and music collector and player of many genres including, global psychedelic rock, classic psychedelic, rare cultural and global contemporary music. He's an art framer with more the 15 years of experience. He frames for artists, galleries and art colectors.
